What a distribution transformer does
A distribution transformer transfers electrical energy between circuits and changes voltage for downstream use. Utility systems commonly use higher-voltage feeders and then distribute power at lower secondary voltages to commercial buildings, industrial loads, farms, homes, and other facilities. A unit's nameplate identifies the electrical design that matters for evaluation: primary and secondary voltage, kVA capacity, phase, frequency, impedance, temperature rise, insulation class, BIL, taps, serial number, and manufacturer. The physical format also matters. Pole-mounted, pad-mounted, vault, and indoor dry-type equipment can have different removal, storage, and transport requirements. Do not rely on appearance or cabinet size to identify a unit; use the nameplate and records when available.

Liquid-filled and dry-type units
Liquid-immersed transformers use insulating liquid for dielectric strength and heat transfer. The liquid may be mineral oil or another fluid, so fluid type, leak history, testing, and containment information should be included in a submission. Dry-type transformers use air or solid insulation rather than an insulating-liquid tank and are common inside commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities. NEMA identifies TP 1 as a guide for determining the efficiency of certain single- and three-phase dry-type and liquid-filled distribution transformers. For either design, a buyer needs to distinguish an intact, tested unit from equipment that is damaged, incomplete, contaminated, or intended only for material recovery.

What sellers should submit
A complete equipment description helps Transformer Buyers decide whether an opportunity merits further review and what questions to ask next. Submit clear photos of the full unit, nameplate, bushings, radiators, gauges, terminals, wheels or mounting hardware, and any visible damage. Include the manufacturer, model and serial number, year if known, primary and secondary ratings, kVA, phase, frequency, impedance, taps, fluid type, and whether the unit is energized, de-energized, drained, tested, or stored. Quantity and location are essential for assessing logistics. Mention available test reports, oil analysis, maintenance history, removal paperwork, ownership status, and known PCB information. Finally, describe safe access: loading area, doors or gates, overhead obstructions, stairs, dock or ground-level access, lifting points, and whether a qualified site contact can coordinate the next step.

Condition, records, and environmental information
Age alone does not determine whether a distribution transformer has a viable reuse, repair, resale, or recycling path. Condition review should consider corrosion, cracked bushings, damaged cabinets, missing covers, evidence of overheating, oil seepage, moisture, and whether the core and coil assembly is complete. Records can clarify prior service and reduce uncertainty. EPA's PCB rules distinguish PCB Transformers and PCB-Contaminated Transformers and include requirements for use, servicing, storage, labeling, disposal, and records in relevant situations. Sellers should not sample, open, drain, move, or alter electrical equipment unless that work is assigned to qualified personnel under the applicable site and regulatory procedures. Planning the next step
Before a transformer is moved, confirm its electrical status, ownership, dimensions, approximate weight, center of gravity, fluid condition, and the site's loading constraints with qualified personnel. Preserve the nameplate and related records, and keep photos tied to the correct serial number when several units are involved. For outdoor storage, consider weather exposure, drainage, secondary containment where applicable, security, and protection from vehicle impact; for indoor storage, consider floor loading, ventilation, fire protection, and clearance requirements established by the responsible engineer or facility program. DOE's current standards and implementation dates apply to covered new equipment, while a used unit's evaluation depends on its actual design, condition, documentation, and intended disposition.
