Start with construction and application
Transformer categories often overlap. A unit may be pad-mounted, oil-filled and three-phase at the same time. The enclosure describes how it is installed, the cooling medium describes construction, and the phase and ratings describe electrical application.
Use the nameplate rather than appearance alone. It is the most reliable place to find the manufacturer, ratings, voltage, phase, frequency, impedance, cooling class and fluid information.
- Pad-mounted: enclosed outdoor distribution equipment
- Dry-type: air-cooled coils in an enclosure
- Oil-filled: liquid-insulated and cooled equipment
- Power transformer: higher-capacity utility or industrial service
- Three-phase: common commercial and industrial configuration
