Why ratings and records matter
The rating determines what kind of review is appropriate. DOE defines a distribution transformer using limits that include input voltage of 34.5 kV or less, output voltage of 600 V or less, 60 Hz operation, and specified kVA ranges; many government assets fall outside that definition, so the full nameplate remains important. A unit’s age alone does not establish value. Condition, configuration, test evidence, storage history, known defects, and whether controls, bushings, radiators, or tap changers remain with it can materially change the assessment.
