Manufacturing plants, processing facilities, warehouses, data-heavy operations, water and wastewater sites, and other industrial properties use transformers at different points in their electrical systems. A project may involve a single dry-type transformer inside a building, several liquid-filled units at a substation, or equipment removed during a plant expansion, shutdown, or electrical upgrade. Units can be working, spare, disconnected, damaged, or of unknown condition. Include the manufacturer, model, serial number, approximate year, enclosure or mounting style, and whether the transformer is dry or liquid filled when known. Mixed lots are worth describing rather than separating assumptions from facts. Information to submit for a useful review
The nameplate is the best starting point. Send legible photos of the full plate and, where practical, the enclosure, bushings, gauges, cooling equipment, terminals, and visible damage. Identify the key ratings: kVA, phase, primary and secondary voltage, frequency, impedance, BIL, temperature rise, tap configuration, and cooling class. For liquid-filled equipment, state the fluid type if documented and whether there are leak, alarm, gauge, or containment concerns. For dry-type equipment, note ventilation, enclosure condition, and visible contamination or heat damage. Also provide quantity, approximate dimensions and weight if available, present condition, and whether the unit is connected, isolated, or ready for a qualified electrical contractor to assess.

Records and condition can change the evaluation
Industrial plants often retain records that are more useful than a short description. Attach purchase or installation information, inspection and test reports, oil test results, maintenance history, one-line diagrams, incident notes, prior repair records, and decommissioning documentation when available. Identify whether the transformer was removed from service because of age, capacity change, a fault, water intrusion, overheating, a project redesign, or an unknown reason. Do not guess at a rating or fluid classification; label unknown items as unknown. EPA rules can apply to PCB-containing electrical equipment and oil, so existing labels, test results, manifests, and facility records should be preserved and shared with the qualified environmental or electrical professionals responsible for the site.

Plan the site and access details
A review also depends on how the equipment can be reached. Describe the plant address, indoor or outdoor location, floor or platform level, doors and clearances, loading-dock or gate access, turning space, overhead obstructions, stairs, ramps, rigging points, and whether a crane, forklift, trailer, or specialty mover may be needed. Note operating hours, escorts, security rules, utility coordination, and any restrictions caused by production or hazardous areas. Keep the transformer isolated from unauthorized access and do not open, test, move, drain, or disconnect electrical equipment as part of a submission. OSHA requires appropriate electrical work practices around equipment that may be energized; only qualified personnel should determine isolation, lockout/tagout, testing, rigging, and environmental handling procedures.

Send the equipment summary, photos, records, quantity, location, and access notes through the inquiry process.
